The Surreal Scars from Oil Palms (or: We are the Tapeworms of Earth)

The Surreal Scars from Oil Palms is a series of satellite images taken from Google Earth, showing the geometric patterns (roads and contours) mainly carved by oil palm plantations in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Surreal, odd and eerie, these images depict the human footprint in worm-like patterns, as if we are the parasites of a great, dwindling host planet.

  1. This is a great project-- painful to watch how our country's government are so insensitive towards protecting our environment. Malaysia, one of the few megabiodiverse countries in the world, is doing this. Definitely more awareness needs to be raised among Malaysians eh? ;)

  2. Yes, and hopefully as photographers and image producers, we can convey the urgency through pictures.
